Smoke Alarms Save Lives

A working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire by half. At Station 9, we want to ensure every home in our district is protected.

  • Test Monthly: Press the test button to ensure the battery and sensor are working.
  • Change Batteries: Replace batteries at least once a year—a good rule of thumb is when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
  • Replace Units: Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

Plan Your Escape

In the event of a fire, you may have less than two minutes to safely exit your home. Does your family know what to do?

  • Map It Out: Identify two ways out of every room.
  • Pick a Meeting Place: Choose a fixed landmark outside (like a specific tree or the mailbox) where everyone will gather.
  • Practice: Run a home fire drill twice a year so the response becomes second nature.

Protecting Your Rural Property

Winter Heating & Chimneys

Many Alleghany County residents rely on wood stoves and fireplaces. Ensure your chimney is cleaned and inspected annually by a professional to prevent creosote buildup and flue fires. Keep flammable materials at least three feet away from space heaters.

Wildfire Readiness

Maintain a "defensible space" around your home by clearing dry brush, dead leaves, and overhanging branches. During dry seasons, be extra vigilant with outdoor fires and always check for active burn bans.

Before you light that brush pile, ensure you have the proper permits and that conditions are safe.
